Ben's Pizza - Why bother
In a city like NYC where there's hardly a want for a good slice, I can't see what the fuss could be about Ben's (unless you're a MIB fan). It's cheap, yes but it's also sloppy, heavy and frankly, pretty average. You can find better in SoHo.

Be There Or Be...Square Diner
Hal Hartley fans will recognize the exterior of the Square Diner from his film, "Amateur". Inside what you'll find is authentic diner-style food: sandwiches, pie, burgers, pancakes etc. The food is fresh and of a fair quality given that you're at a diner. It's pretty easy to get out of there having spent only $10 which makes it a popular destination for locals and fans of the less glamorous end of the TriBeCa eating spectrum. The Square Diner has been open since the 1970's but when TriBeCa became a landmark district the Square became a victim of this blanket listing. In some respects this has kept the building preserved in its classic 70's style but hindered it in other respe...

Cinema - Good food and reasonably priced
Check it out next time you've hit Barney's, The Apple Store on 5th Ave, Bergdorf's or having strolled through the south end of Central Park. Admittedly Cinema is a little cheesy with it's repro film posters wallpapered to the walls but what it lacks in cred it more than makes up for in service and food. My companion ordered the mini burgers which I have to admit were very cute and apparently tasted amazing. I had a chicken wrap which was made with fresh ingredients, avocado, tomato etc. The presentation was also very good and at around $10 each, it was good value. Just what you need to recharge yourself for a second round of Sunday afternoon shopping.

Moondance Diner
Around since the 1930's, Moondance is one of a handful of classic diners still left in NYC. That in itself isn't enough reason to eat there but what is, are there sandwiches, soups and breakfasts. Obviously this isn't gourmet fodder so expect diner food and you wont be disappointed. There's also no attitude like you always find at diner's like the Empire in Chelsea. I like getting a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee (a pretty darn nice coffee as far as coffee goes that's not made from an expresso machine) and walking away having only dropped $2.50 *Note for fans of the TV series "Friends": This is the diner Monica Geller worked at.

Hell's Kitchen Flea Market: Putting the Kitch in Kitchen
Formerly located in Chelsea, the Annex Flea Market moved to Hell's Kitchen a couple of years ago when the original vacant parking lot was re-developed. In Chelsea the Antique Garage (in-door flea market) is still at 112 West 25TH St between 6th and 7th Avenue and a shuttle operates between the two markets approx every 20 minutes and stops right on the corner of 25th St and 6th. Also, just across 6th Ave is the West 25th St Market (a large outdoor vacant lot). All 3 markets operate roughly between dawn and dusk. Some suggest that "the early bird catches the worm" but in reality, it's never been an issue for me other than the time I narrowly missed out on buying a $150 cl...

Bubby's - Take it or leave it
Bubby's Tribeca has had a fair amount of fuss made about it. It's even featured in the film adaptation of Devil Wears Prada. It seems to be like one of those really hot bands that everyone knows and likes but it's difficult to hear what everyone else is hearing. The food is rich and heavy regardless of what you order from burgers to salads to desserts. Sometimes "heavy" is exactly what you're in the mood for but variety is also appealing. It's a fairly "family oriented" diner so those with kids will feel at home. Crayons are provided for extra fun/ mess. When I feel like lashing out, I go for their meatloaf which comes with gravy, deep fried onions (which they te...

Whole Foods - and Nothing But The Foods
Food shopping ain't easy in this city. Sure, Food Emporium is fine for everyday items (but make sure you check the receipt on your way out as mistakes are consistently high…and irritating). Fresh Direct means not actually having to leave the apartment but you lose the ability to smell/ squeeze/ see/ touch your food before you buy. Gourmet Garage is great when you just want to pick up dinner and a couple of treats and Trader Joe's is good for bargain-priced basics (such as their home brand Cheerios which are a third of the cost of the original!). Whole Foods may be king of the food castle though. Simply put, it's the kind of supermarket that makes you want to eat. Their natural and ...

Le Pain Quotidien - SoHo
The issue in coming to a French bakehouse for a meal is that for the outing to be enjoyable, you really need to get the cornerstone of your business (the bread) sorted out. Without the brightest baguette or the most sinful of sourdoughs - at least for me - the yeast just ain't gonna rise. Le Pain Quotidien do a fair job and the bread is fine but not overly memorable. What they do well though are perfect soft boiled eggs, yolk runny but not too runny if you get me. The coffee is also very good which almost balances out where they lack in great bread. I recommend trying the Mocha which comes with the warm runny chocolate on the side (which could be successfully argued is simply a chaser...

Sosa Borella - Tribeca
Sosa Borella (Tribeca) is located in a quiet little nook on Greenwich street. A highly recommended brunch/ lunch destination. During the week the place is hopping and I'd recommend booking just to be safe otherwise you may have to wait up at the bar for 5-10 mins. On the weekend, not such an issue. Sosa Borella's coffee needs to mentioning. ***** effort and I think we all know what it's like to be eating in a NY cafe with great food and then sip the piss-weak "coffee". Not so here. Their coffee is rich and exceptional. Is this from the Italian or the Argentinian influences I wonder... Worth experiencing are the Pollo Californian (chicken baguette with avocado, havarti and spi...

Odeon the money
Superb steaks (though steer clear of the Hangar if possible purely because it's an inferior cut of meat), carefully made salads, decadent desserts and devilishly inviting cocktails, The Odeon can't be beat. The atmosphere is classic: a touch of Deco with fine, aged mirrors and dark wood paneling. The able, professional staff all sport black and white in keeping with the understated interior. A couple can easily walk away from dinner with a $150 check but the beauty of this landmark establishment is that you can turn up for coffee of even a late night bowl of fries after a few too many ales.
