Cheap Shots Inc

Lives up to its name, but at a price!
I had a bartender come out from behind the bar and return my tip to me when she decided it wasn't enough one night when I went here for a friend's birthday...despite the fact that I had tipped generously on many drinks before that. Honey, don't work at a bar with $2.50 ladies specials and expect great tips on every one! There are definitely some shady characters that hang out here, but the air hockey table is worth some of the bull. How often do you see those? Just hope you don't go the same night as the underground air hockey expert who likes to call winner and then stay on the table the rest of the night and trick other people into paying for his games.

Mary Poppins

Poppins is long overdue!
I saw Mary Poppins back in 2004 when I visited London for the first time. It was a must see! I grew up on this movie. It truly does not disappoint. I was so impressed at how the new songs (there are some added by a new songwriting team that weren't in the original movie) fit in with the old and how all my favorite parts were translated into "stage magic." It was also nice to see some different Poppins stories. Oh, and that Bert? (Gavin Lee.) Adorable!!

Tarzan is high flying fun
I didn't expect much after the lukewarm reviews I've read but I was pleasantly surprised by this show. Tarzan himself is a former American Idol contestant and it shows! His voice is INCREDIBLE! It really is one of the most spectacular looking shows I've ever seen between the lighting and the swinging and the first shipwreck scene. It's worth a look for fans of environmental theater experiences. No one does it like Disney.

Looking forward to Hi Fi!
I saw a presentation of some music of this show and have a sampler CD and it ROCKS. I've also seen the star Will Chase, who takes on the John Cusack role, in both Lennon and Rent and he's an incredible actor with a crystal clear high rock tenor voice. I'm so looking forward to this!

Island Burgers & Shakes

Bugers the size of your head
They serve their burgers REALLY thick here. There are probably 50 different topping combinations, and you can get anything on the menu as a chicken sandwich instead of hamburger. There are even big, delicious salads! Warning: the medium burger is sometimes really rare compared to other places. Take them seriously when they warn you. Also, no french fries, but they do serve delicious homemade potato chips or stuffed baked potatoes. The decor is bright, fun and relaxed. It's a perfect place for lunch in the midtown area or for a quick dinner. Try the Cowboy.

Radio City Music Hall

An NYC landmark
Radio City lives up to the legend. The inside is HUGE and GORGEOUSLY decorated. If you ever have the chance to go to a concert or event--take it! It's big (they've got to fit those long Rockette legs in there!) but the sight lines in the theater are great and wide, so even if you end up pretty far back you won't have a blocked view anywhere. You feel like a star in Radio City even if you're there for a basketball game. (Which I still can't figure out how they play on the stage.)

Duplex, The

Nightlife

A neighborhood feel smack in the center of the bustling West Village
I always feel at home when I stop by the Duplex. On any given night you can hear Broadway-calibur performers belt their hearts out to your favorite pop or showtunes, all while drinking a totally reasonably priced drink. And they take requests! Watch out for Kate Pazakis, Brian Nash, Maria Gentile and Candice Harper. WOW. Yes, the scene is technically gay, but no matter which way you swing you'll be comfortable. Outdoor seating and frozen drinks in the summer too.

Paris Theatre

Buried in the footprint of the Plaza
I've heard this little jewel of a theater is in danger of being closed, which makes me sad. There are typically French-themed films here (but not always). It's a gorgeous auditorium with a really big screen and wide open seating. I can't remember what it used to be but it kind of feels like a planetarium. You've seen it when you've been to visit the Plaza -- right on the left side if you're facing the hotel. Very unique.

Angelika Film Center

I'm pretty sure they serve beer here...
I could be wrong, but if that's not enough to tempt you, the Angelika is the best place to go for underground/unusual independent films. I saw "Supersize Me" here before it blew up (excuse the pun) and cried over "Before Sunset" with my mom. The whole experience of seeing a movie has a real New York feel -- it's a landmark! I don't think you can ever go wrong even picking a film you've never heard of.

Great movie theater but get there early!
The movie offerings are always right at Union Square and you can't beat having Cosi across the street (and Wendy's/Tasti-D a block down!) but it's popular with NYU students and theaters fill up fast. No worries, though, if you miss your movie just catch one at the top of the park in the 19th Street theater or sit on the steps of Union Square and watch the people instead!
