Primo East Village freak watching.
The wait for Sunday morning brunch can be a bit long, but you if your hungry and broke, you can’t beat this deal. For less than 10 dollars, you can get a very large BCB (big country breakfast) that totally hits the spot when you’re hung over from a the night before. Don’t forget to get a table outside and entertain yourself with primo east village freak watching!

Shh! Don't tell anyone.
Imagine a sexy 70’s lounge blaring rock music with a bunch of hard looking rockers sitting around the bar staring into their beer. The owner looks like a really young, good looking, healthy version of Axle Rose. People that live in the area don’t really want others to know about this spot. I don’t blame them. It has yet to be taken over by outsiders. Saturday night two for one drink specials are a plus.

Skaters and ROCKERS and artists OH MY!
Everyone that has ever been in a rock band in nyc has been to Max Fish. If you want to someone in a band, go there right now. This place is filled with skaters, graffiti artists, rockers that just got out of band practice, and a few receding mohawks. There is a pool table in the back and some funny video games up front. The crowd is kind of young and dirty, but it’s a good place to get a drink before a show... if it’s not too crowded or taken over by some NYU students birthday party.

I still heart Sway!
Back when it first opened, it was the hottest spot for late night dancing. The doorgirl, Penelope, was one tough bitch. Luckily, she always let me in. On occasion, when my friends couldn’t get in, they would hide behind cars and throw snowballs at her. I think the owner of this website has been officially banned for life. Basically, after it was good, it quickly went bad. Now that it’s off the radar, people are starting to go there again. And honestly, it’s one of the few places beneath 14th street that you can dance late at night. We affectionately refer to it as “Fucksway”. Okay, I admit that I still heart Fucksway.

Get lit at Lit
This multi-leveled den of sin is both a rock venue and bar. One of the owner’s, a well-know patron of indi-rockers, books tons of up-and-coming rock bands and local djs (Hilary Duff djed there once, but don’t let that confuse you.) The first floor has a big bar, seating area and a small gallery in the back. The basement level has a small stage, dancing area, bar and vip room. The VIP room isn’t that difficult to get into, however there is a secret VIP room you can go to with the owner if you are a relatively pretty girl. Don’t be surprised to see the likes of Jim Jarmusch, Michelle Gondry or Dave Pajo at the end of the bar. Extra perk: They usually let you stay after-hours if you chat up one...

I hope to be at the Piano's retrospective 10 years from now.
I remember when it first opened. It was my favorite place... then the B&T came... then they started having really cool indi-bands and after-parties there... then the B&T went away. I suspect Piano’s will become a place people write about what it was like (back in the day) 10 years from now. I hope to be at that opening.

My favorite little sanctuary!
This is my favorite little sanctuary. The first floor has a great hot and cold veggie bar. For around $6, you can pile you plate up as high as the sky with yummy veggie delights. The second floor has a warm and inviting internet lounge. And finally, the secret third floor has a super cute all organic bar! It’s a great place to hang-out by yourself, meet people or just chill and work during the day. An added bonus...all of the cute boy bands that practice on Ludlow street frequent there. Hey, this critic can’t live on vegetables alone!

The real punks are already dead (or almost).
I don’t like CBGBs. Outside, you can usually find a straggly group of poser punk 12-yr-olds from NJ. It makes me sad. Mainly, because it reminds me of my own fashion mishaps at age 12. (It was only 7th grade, I promise!) The bands? If you want new punk, go to Lit.
