UNTITLED (ON PAPER)

JANUARY 10 - FEBRUARY 9, 2008

OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 6 PM - 8 PM

MOTI HASSON GALLERY is very pleased to announce the opening of UNTITLED (ON PAPER), an exhibition that celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Gallery's move to its current Chelsea location. The exhibition runs from January 10 to February 9, 2008. Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, January 10, from 6 to 8 pm.

Since the traditional gift for the first anniversary is paper, Moti Hasson Gallery will present a group exhibition of works on paper by Gallery artists LIHI CHEN, ZIPORA FRIED, JACKIE GENDEL, TOMMY HARTUNG, DAVID KRAMER, PAUL PAGK, SHINIQUE SMITH, and guest artists DERRICK ADAMS, URI ARAN, DAVID ARMSTRONG SIX, MARK BARROW, MONICA COOK, WILLIAM DOWNS, KELTIE FERRIS, DANA FRANKFORT, LUIS GISPERT, PABLO HELGUERA, JON KESSLER, DAN KOPP, YASUE MAETAKE, TOM McGRATH, ANDY MOON-WILSON, JENNIFER MURPHY, RUNE OLSEN, RAYMOND PETTIBON, SABEEN RAJA, MARC ANDRE ROBINSON, CARLOS ROQUE, and DEREK SULLIVAN.

For many of the artists in the exhibition who work in a variety of media, UNTITLED (ON PAPER) showcases a sometimes less known, if related and no less consequential aspect of their practice. For others, paper serves as a primary source and subject matter for their work. Informed by conceptual practices that are ephemera (i.e. books, posters, multiples) and distribution based, their contributions expand what "inscription on the page" can mean for artists today. Ultimately, the exhibition features artists who have created works that incorporate paper, but that are not limited to drawings. In so doing, UNTITLED (ON PAPER) extends the idea of paper as both subject and material, as well as referencing the larger impact of how paper circulates through mainstream media, and how its presentation in other formats like literature, poetry, graffiti, graphic design, and criticism affect artists and their work in both form and content.

Gen Art is proud to invite Gen Art Platinum & Higher Level Members to a Collector's Circle Private Preview and Reception of the work of Hope Gangloff.

The paintings and drawings of Hope Gangloff faithfully illustrate a life lived. Though drawn from casual snapshots, each work suggests a constructed mise-en-scene whose actors, props and sets have been drawn directly from central casting. Every scrap of wallpaper, each cigarette or paper lantern, every expression and gesture is lavished with care and attention. It is this obsessive attention to detail that propels the work beyond the familiar into the realm of the surreal.

Tags: hope gangloff

Sperone Westwater is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent drawings by Julian Schnabel. Titled “Navigation Drawings,” these works are painted in oil on found vintage nautical maps which are subsequently mounted onto stretched linen. Despite their intimate scale, these drawings suggest an expanding pictorial space. Rotating the map on its side or upside down, the artist releases its informational content to emphasize gesture and fluidity. Each stroke describes the speed and direction of its marking, and in this way, the drawings are as precise and as abstract as the maps onto which they are painted. The overall visual sensation is one of openness and light; one also detects a cinematic impulse to frame and focus the image.

Tags: Julian Schnabel
