The Mayor's office in New York City is seeking to instate a new rule that would require permits and proof of insurance for any group of 2 or more persons using a camera in a public area. The regulations would require that anyone using a tripod or shooting in one location for more than 30 minutes (including set-up and break down time) must obtain permits and show proof of insurance of at least 1 million dollars per occurrence. Read more about the new rules here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/html/news/080107_proposed_permit_rules.shtml
We all need to act now to fight these proposed regulations which will place absurd restrictions on the freedom to photograph in New York City's public spaces.
This affects not only professional photographers but the First Amendment rights of anyone with a camera to spontaneously document what happens on the streets of this city.
Due to pressure from advocacy groups, the Mayor's Office has agreed to extend the period that it will allow public commentary until August 3rd.
Picture New York has initiated an online petition opposing the new rules, which over 12,000 indidivuals have signed so far. The petition is closing on August 3rd. Please take a moment to sign if you have not already done so.

powerHouse Books, Amnesty International, and Barnes & Noble present
Ron Haviv, Leora Kahn, and Larry Cox
Contributors to Darfur: Twenty Years of War and Genocide in Sudan
July 30, 2007, 7pm
Barnes & Noble Astor Place,
4 Astor Place, New York, NY (between Broadway and Lafayette)
Tel: 212-420-1322
About the book, Darfur: Twenty Years of War and Genocide in Sudan:
Even by conservative estimates, the situation in the Darfur region of the Sudan is grave. There are 3.5 million people who are hungry, 2.5 million who have been displaced by violence, and 400,000 individuals who have died since the crisis began in 2003. The international community has failed to take steps to protect civilians, or to influence the Sudanese government to intervene. The spread of violence, rape, and hate-fueled killings across the border into Chad is simply the latest atrocity. Call it war. Call it genocide. Call it famine. There is no single word to describe the plight of these people. They face all of these horrors at once.

5 pairs of guest list spots are up for grabs (and some free beers if you can identify your favorite MuseBox employee).
The first five people to e-mail us at rsvp@themusebox.net will receive two complimentary spots on tonight's guest list. Further, the guest that can find a MuseBox employee first, will get some booze.
Mercury Lounge
217 E. Houston St.
9:30 Patrick Krief (The Dears)
10:30 Uncut
About Uncut: It sounds a bit hyperbolic, but we don't shy away from enthusiasm here at The MuseBox: Canada's Uncut is like a force of fucking nature. Seriously, their latest beast, Modern Currencies -- finally slated for US release on July 17th via Paper Bag Records -- is filled with massive, throat-punching rock music. Stuff that's willing to manhandle any takers and snuff out the weak. The album-opening "Darkhorse" begins with a breeze of guitar and sore throat bass thuds, but at about the two-and-a-half minute mark it gives in to a torrent of squalls, drum rolls and a refrain of "let's just kill all the living, they're not made to live." Um, whoa. See for yourself on the fantastic Kris Lefcoe directed stop-animation clip for "Darkhorse," featuring, among other things, a fire-bombing Ronald McDonald and an army of pissed-off Care Bears.

SOLAR SET
MICHAEL BELL-SMITH
OLGA CHERNYSHEVA
TONY LABAT
TAKESHI MURATA
SIEBREN VERSTEEG
July 12 - August 10, 2007
Opening reception: Thursday, July 12, 6-8pm
Foxy Production presents Solar Set, a group exhibition featuring works by Michael Bell-Smith, Olga Chernysheva, Tony Labat, Takeshi Murata, and Siebren Versteeg. Solar Set refers to a box work by Joseph Cornell from 1958, where the artist collected and arranged solar statistics, spherical objects, and images of the sun, among other elements, to create an idiosyncratic universe in miniature. The exhibition explores the ways in which images, objects or events are collected and reconfigured within conceptually rich and critically resonant visual systems. Using diverse means, the works take popular cultural forms as their starting point to forge imaginative connections, evocative images, and unexpected metaphors.

Special guest Alex Arcadia will be reading for Sculpture Center's
*Speak Easy: Reading on the Rocks*, and presenting his "A Gift for You".
Thursday, July 12, 7pm
*Speak Easy: Readings on the Rocks*
Bring blankets and snacks for a relaxed summer evening with readings by Ross Cisneros, Sarah Lookofsky, Joanna Malinowska, Jackie McAllister, Adam McEwen, Haley Mellin, Maria Mirabal, Montevideo (Rita Ackermann and Emily Sundblad), Olivier Mossett, Michael Portnoy with Pete Drungle, Garrett Ricciardi, Michael Smith, Alex Arcadia, Trevor Smith, Mary Rinebold, Agathe Snow and Mindy Vale.
Speak Easy: Readings on the Rocks was first planned as a moment of relief from the pressures of city life, the demands of a finished product, binding statements, and stiff speaker/audience relations. Fifteen artists, cultural producers, and special guests have been invited to read a text of their choice. It is up to the reader to determine the length and mode of address. The text provenances are loose – it is sometimes vague as to whether the words are a citation, an excerpt or a draft. The aim, if there is one, is to come as close as possible to the informal, seamless, and fertile digressions among friends, foes, and peers. The pretext is to create a moment (at a certain stage), rather than a place (on stage), to swap dialectics of
success or failure for the softer, warmer light, of trial, probe, and
momentary inspiration.
Sculpture Center
44-19 Purves Street
Long Island City, NY 11101
t 718.361.1750
Directions by subway:
Take E or V to 23rd/Ely or G top Court Square or the 7 to 45th Road/Court House Square. From all trains walk north on Jackson Avenue one block past 44th Drive and turn right onto Purves Street.

Zach Feuer Gallery
530 W. 24th Street
New York, NY 10011
Tel: 1 212 989 7700
Fax: 1 212 989 7720
Hours: Tuesday – Friday 10-6
Exhibition dates: July 10- August 24, 2007
Opening Reception: July 10, 6-8 pm
Zach Feuer Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of new paintings by New York based artists Joe Bradley, Ann Craven, Dana Frankfort, and Keith Mayerson.
Bradley’s bright canvas panels take Minimalist references and create imposing installations of color and scale, while his casual application of paint forgoes ideas of pictorial illusion. Rather than use the monumental size to suggest a certain grandeur, his paintings reveal an utterly human, necessarily imperfect quality, which is magnified in his version of figuration.
Craven adeptly uses repetition in her serial paintings, which depict familiar imagery often culled
from mediated and natural sources, revealing a reinterpretation of the painter’s traditional aims of singularity and original composition. She adopts these images of nature from generic representation, as well as the outside world, aware that both have become equally familiar to her viewer.
Frankfort’s paintings use text and, more recently, symbols to challenge ideas of reading and communication.
Obscuring the text as image with brushwork and disorienting color, Frankfort blocks the viewer’s facility of interpretation and forges a new relationship between language and audience.
Mayerson's lushly painted portraits based on familiar media imagery reduce the iconic to the intimate,
and are exhibited in deliberate sequences that suggest larger narrative themes. In the group of paintings for this exhibition, he concentrates on the power of iconic images to portray human agency, spirit, and transcendence in times of crisis and war.

EXHIBITION: WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?
Featuring collaborative pieces by:
Antistrot Elena Monzo
Robert Brinker Joseph Scheer
Ludovica Gioscia Karen Tang
Pamela Joseph Robert Brinker
Christina McPhee Benjamin Fink
Christa Parravani Helen Garber
Clement Price-Thomas Duston Spear
Roger Ricco Luke Gilvey
Lucien Samaha John Movius
DATES: July 9--August 3, 2007
RECEPTION: Monday, July 9, 6 - 8pm
Sara Tecchia Roma New York is proud to present a curatorial experiment.
So there's this text by William Burroughs and Brion Gysin called the Third Mind. It's about the cut-up, where words or even segments of film can be randomized and create new forms that make just as much sense as the original, sometimes even becoming prophetic. This show isn't really about that, but rather what happens when two artists try to stay true to their own practices while collaborating on a single piece. We asked our gallery artists, as well as some new faces, to choose a partner and make a piece for our summer show. They could do anything they wanted. No rules.
At the moment of this press release, we've only seen a few results. Ludovica Gioscia applied her custom silkscreened wallpaper skills to a pair of sculptor Karen Tang's oversized Ray-Ban sunglasses to make the best summer sculpture ever. Robert Brinker did one of his signature cut out patterns over a fancy moth photo by Joseph Scheer and another with a comic collage by Pamela Joseph. And then there are drawings that Antistrot did with Elena Monzo. In case you don't know, Antistrot is already a collective, a group of kids from Rotterdam that work together on stuff. They're doing a big mural at 3rd Ward. (See below.) Monzo's addition is great in that it adds a bit of femininity to the otherwise macho blood-and-guts subject matter. Very nice.
As for the other pieces, I guess we'll see those when they come in. Duston Spear and Clement-Price-Thomas supposedly have something mechanical with the working title, "Tiffany Blood." Some participants have even refused to give even us a sneak preview. We're actually a little scared, but scared like a rollercoaster. Fun scared. Not scarey scared.
SARA TECCHIA ROMA NEW YORK is located at 529 West 20th Street, between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue. The gallery is on the second floor. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 11am to 6pm or by appointment. For more information, contact 212-741-2900, or visit www.saratecchia.com
