Then, join us this Thursday for the first gallery night of the 529 Arts
Building. Our Busse/Ricco will still be up, and all the galleries in
our building will be open from 6 to 8pm. Refreshments will also be
served, and there will be an after-party at Lotus.
See the review of DIETMAR BUSSE's photographs in this week's New Yorker:
Busse, a photographer in temporary exile from New York last year, made
these austere winter landscapes in and around the German village where
he was born. Several of his strongest images center on single, leafless
trees--one silvered with a coat of snow, all of them dramatically spare
and sculptural against blank skies. Flat, green fields disappear at the
horizon in a line of mist-covered trees; a dappled gray horse gallops
across a blur of white; an eviscerated bird, feathers scattered all
around, spreads its wings one last time in the snow. In Busse's
pictures from home, his remembrance of things past suffuses the present
with real tenderness. Through July 1. (Tecchia, 529 W. 20th St.

Alexander Julian Retrospective
Uncommon Threads
This month-long exhibit is an entertaining, artistically approached,
in-depth analysis of 30 years of designer Alexander Julian's innovative
contributions in men's and women's fashion and home furnishings.
Playful installations illuminate Julian's textile design process.
His innovative slant on form, color, pattern and scale will be
highlighted throughout the exhibition.
The Retrospective will include historical installations of signature
design motifs and a spectrum of examples of the diversity of original
color and pattern work in clothing, textiles and furniture. Also
included are historic sports uniforms and original costumes from the
Robert Altman film, The Player.
Listening to Color, a short film by screenwriter Alex Rose, spans three
decades of Julian's style. Original music score composed by jazz
pianist Eric Lewis.
For the past three decades, Alexander Julian has made an indelible mark
on the creative landscape, utilizing his distinctive flair for opulent
textures, superior craftsmanship and marvelous color. A five-time Coty
award winner and youngest inductee to the Fashion Hall of Fame,
Julian's textile designs are in the Smithsonian National Design

Lisa Kirk and Joe Latimore
Are Delighted to Announce The Grand opening of
LEGION AT SENSEI
With a project/performance by Rose Kallal
June 20, 2006
9pm –10pm complimentary cocktail
10pm till we run out of things to drink and do...
58 Kenmare Street NYC
Legion at Sensei is pleased to present the work of Rose Kallal, a film
and sound artist who lives and works in NYC. Kallal recently presented
her multiple 16mm projections/performance entitled Into the Prism at
P.S.1 MOMA, the project was accompanied with a live music performance
by Growing. Additionally, a variation of the project was presented
earlier this year at Gavin Brown Enterprise at Passerby, NYC.
For Legion, Kallal will present Infinite Pyrite, a multiple 16mm film
loop projection and installation that combines a complex use of color,
light and geometrics. Kallal’s work implies a use of found and or
recycled footage however; the artist has created all of the film
work.
In this work Kallal states that, “primordial imagery is brought forth
with the suggestion that form beholds a matrix of vibration”.
For the opening event, Kallal has invited Angela Means/DeMeath to work
with her to create a live sound accompaniment with vinyl selections of
prevalent recording artists who specialize in minimalist, low frequency
drone such as Sunn O))), Earth, Boris and Growing.
These sound pieces will interrelate with the projections, thus creating
a context within the space to complete the environment.
Following the live performance Kallal’s, Infinite Pyrite will continue
during gallery hours with a sound piece designed specifically for the
remaining duration of the exhibition.

EVA New York proudly presents the Summer debut and Fall preview of women’s ready–to-wear collection Society for Rational Dress by Corrine Grassini along with the debut of their secondary line Guild. A tribute to the guild of women in the late 19th-century, London, who were opposed to the restrictive, body-deforming undergarments imposed by society, Grassini’s design are more cerebral than celebrity-crazy, intrigued by the way culture defines what constitutes appropriate and logical clothing. Grassini considers her pieces as a form of industrial craft rather than avant-garde art, meant to be a form of self-expression by the person who wears them.

With Summer licking at our heels, it’s time to get into another rude X puma summer series. To help us kick things off properly, we’ve asked our good friend and UK counterpart Benji B to bless us with his signature selection of ruffed-up hip hop, upfront West London styles soulful jems, fresh and classic. For those who missed his massive set at our second anniversary bashment, suffice to say it was more than worthy of a sequel.
Upstairs it's another Hasmojazz session with Cool Gypsy Bogdan, a secret blend of herbs and spices, guaranteed to entice and delight. Also, you'll have a chance to get up close and personal with Puma's latest media project, The African Game. A collaboration between Andrew Dosunmu Knox Robinson, the book is a stunning document of the continent and it's deep love affair with futbol culture. There will be a few copies of this gorgeous book for sale upstairs, with all proceeds going to benefit Grassroot Soccer, an international AIDS relief organization.
$7 with RSVP / $10 Door. Open Bar 9pm-10pm
