But then people remembered creative bands often "change" when they put out new albums and everything was okay. Crazy, right? Laurence Sterne's "The Life and Times of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" just might be the best 18th century, postmodern novel ever. But, really, it's the only 18th century postmodern novel we've ever read, so we don't really know what we're talking about. "A Cock and Bull Story," starring Steve Coogan and Gillian Anderson, takes the same digressive, self-referential route as the novel, making it a movie about making a movie of "Tristram Shandy" with Coogan playing himself, as well as Tristram and Tristram's father. Judy appears at the Strand tonight, sans cll, clllo, clowns, to read from her new book "Morning Noon and Night: Living the Creative Life." Opening tonight at the Bronx's Longwood Art Gallery, "Do You Think I'm Disco?" examines the influence of club culture on America in the post liberation movements of the '60s and '70s. The exhibit, which features artists like "Funky Cold Medina" sculptor Karlos Carcamo and collage artist Edwina White, combines photography, painting, mixed media, sculpture and performance to capture an artistic era bubbling over with urban, aerosol can-influence. You've heard rumblings of something new opening. You may have glimpsed the mildly-insane Dutch designer, Marcel Wanders, coming in and out of an undisclosed location on the Lower East Side.
The question on everyone's mind: what is it?
The answer is the Hotel on Rivington's new invitation-only lounge, which opened last night at a selectively-hyped opening party. Thor finally unveiled the product of many months of tight-lipped effort: behind a nondescript door next to the hotel is a narrow tunnel leading to a small lounge with walls covered in giant white pebbles and masses of Swarovski crystals underneath a glass-top bar. Private alcoves are the way to go here, where you can order Veuve by the half-bottle and food from the restaurant (tip: it's only available if you ask). The atmosphere is relaxed and low-profile and the "VIP" feel ends at the door.
It's a prime place for a nightcap if you're in the neighborhood on a date or seeking something new on a Friday night.
As far as entry goes if you don't have a "membership" key, here is the best of the lines we heard at last night's opening: "We're friends of Marcel's in from the Netherlands."
What a coincidence—us too.

undefinable young artist. Grades were always mediocre at best for
the young suburban Vancouverite, until one semester a mysterious
new course emerged into a normally less than progressive
curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered
were honor roll grades, and a means to merge a captive young mind
with over a decade of communist-style classical piano training.
In 1996, won over by unified dance floors and the Detroit sound,
the 16 year old Frivolous engages in a long term love affair with
the loop and takes his first weekly residency at a downtown
Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years
in electronics and then design, and after dabbling with some
white label releases, Daniel decides to put his pride aside and
send out a demo. A CD of incomplete works were sent out as an
experiment to 5 of the most technologically innovative 12" labels
in Germany and received back were 3 requests to release the
material. "I told Andy [Vaz] that the work wasn't finished, and
the day I received his reply was the day that the test pressings
arrived for the Crankkongestion EP (Background Records), it's
just been a chain reaction since then." Today, after a long
evolution in his sound, Daniel's recording alter-ego Frivolous
captures a romanticly influenced montage of the most cutting edge
production techniques with an old soul mentality. Alongside his
still rather bizarre performances, is the incorporation of
classic instruments and vocals into an environment built on
experiments with glitchy cut-up funk and found sound. We've been
told that Frivulous's live set is a very unique not to be missed
show, and we're psyched to celebrate our 3 year anniversary with
him.

NEW YORK, December 12, 2005 – On January 10, 2006, Parsons The New School for Design will present the first exhibition to examine important interior, furniture, fashion, and graphics design produced in New York City from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, a period in which downtown artists, musicians, playwrights and designers created some of the most avant-garde work produced in America during the last century. Anarchy to Affluence: Design in New York, 1974-1984, will be on view at Parsons’ Arnold and Shelia Aronson Galleries at 66 Fifth Avenue from January 10 to April 2, 2006, and is being organized in conjunction with New York University Grey Art Gallery’s exhibition The Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene, 1974–1984. An opening reception will be held on January 9, from 6-8 p.m.
