Vangeline Theater is proud to present an evening of Butoh at Jonathan Shorr Gallery.
Featuring The Vangeline Theater dancers:
Yukari Coco Koyama from Japan, Vangeline from France, and Jorge Vazquez Villareal from Mexico.
At 7pm, Coco Koyama will perform a Butoh window installation.
At 8pm, a Solo by Vangeline: “the Girl with the pearl earring”,
and at 9pm, a butoh solo improvisation by Jorge Vazquez Villareal.
Performance is Free.
The Vangeline Theater is a dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese Butoh while carrying it into the 21st century. For more information please visit www.vangeline.com.
About the performers:
Coco Koyama moved to New York from her native Tokyo. She has been a principal dancer with the Vangeline Theater since 2004 at venues such as PS 122, Puffin Room, Galapagos, and Theater for the New City. Coco has also been a regular performer for nightlight empress Chichi Valenti since 2005 in
events such as Wigstock, `Night of Thousand Stevies' (Hiro Ballroom),
and weekly parties at Crobar for two years, Additionally, Coco has been
featured on MTV and has performed in Theo Kogan's rock-theater
production`Screentest', directed by Rob Roth. She is also a burlesque
solo-performer, model and a make-up artist.
Vangeline is the Artistic Director of the Vangeline Theater.
Special guest Jorge Vázquez studied at the National Conservatory of Music, under the direction of renowned teachers, such as Arturo Nieto, Horacio Franco, Leszeck Zawadka, where he developed his abilities as singer in galas, operas and concerts.
He studied Dramatic Literature and Theatre at UNAM’s Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, with teachers such as Soledad Ruiz, Mario Balandra and Juan Gabriel Moreno.
He directed the play El Triciclo by Fernando Arrabal, making itself worthy of the awards for “Best scenic/plastic proposal” and “Best actor” at the XI University Theatre Festival. He acted in Jean Frederick Chevalier’s version of HamletMachine, and in Marat/Sade, directed by Mario Balandra.
He is currently studying Dance with Master Diego Piñón at Butoh Mexican Ritual.
