NISH (formerly March Restaurant)

Nish formerly March: Should have remained in the same month
Well I have been putting this off for a while now because I wasn't sure how I should approach this review.  Here goes...

Nish formerly March was intended to be a scaled down, more 'hip' restaurant with more visibility than its original outstanding, but less well-known, March Restaurant in terms of both price and food. Anyone who had read my review of March knows how highly I regarded it, but I went into Nish with an open mind.

The new menu is mainly an a la carte menu with classic French, Middle Eastern, Italian, Chinese-Japanese and Indian influenced cuisine, which while interesting, did not validate the pricing of the new menu. Previously, dinner or the tasting menu and wine or ...

Possibly the "TRUE" Best Burger in NYC
Stumbled across Prune while wandering around downtown looking for someplace open to grab a bite. I ordered a burger, thinking nothing of it.
OH MY GOD!!! I bit into pure HEAVEN as far as burgers go. Their secret is they put lamb meat in the burger mixture. They are juicy, perfectly cooked and have a very distinctive (read: delicious) taste to them.
It is a cute little bistro type place out of the way off of Houston and worth the trip/walk/cab ride. I can't wait to go again.

Cru

Cru - Where was the Sommelier???
Cru - as in wine portfolio - as in over 65,000 bottles with one heavy leather bound book for reds and another for whites.  I was really looking forward to this very hyped-up, wine-oriented, fine dining experience I had heard so much about. I hate to say, I was not impressed.  Yes, the wine list is extensive, however the sommelier who is responsible for it was not on site and our waiter knew nothing about the overwhelming list, so therefore could make no recommendations. Basically, he relied on the pairings for our tasting menu.  The food was above average, but nothing near what I expected. I did enjoy the black bass with steamed shitake mushrooms and also the Papardelle ragu o...

Ava Lounge

GREAT VIEWS at AVA
Ava Penthouse Bar - the rooftop bar at the Dream Hotel offers fantastic views, a hip/cool atmosphere, a dj spinning great music and is overall a great destination, hotel guest or not.  It is next door to D'Or (previously reviewed and to be updated), but about 25 floors higher. Walk through the interesting lobby of the hotel and take the elevator straight up to the penthouse.  It has a rustic, yet retro/modern feel to it. It has great lighting, table service and an outdoor space (attention smokers) which will be a plus when the weather gets warmer.  I had a great time there - it is definitely a midtown alternative to the rooftop lounges downtown. Check it out before the secret ...

D'Or

D'Or - Real Gold or Just Plated?
D'Or is a new lounge/club located next door to the Dream Hotel below the restaurant Amalia (http://www.amalia-nyc.com).  I was there for a Zac Posen party during fashion week before they opened. I liked what I saw.

D'Or is a cave like space, seemingly carved out of stone with a great DJ, space for live bands, tables and banquette seating in the main bar area with enough space for dancing, and an area behind with banquette seating that stretches the length of the walls on both sides. Besides all of the candlelight in the bar areas, there are also little stone niches and stairways that go nowhere all over the place filled with burning dripping candles and oversized crystal chandeliers....

Japonais

JAPONAIS comes to NYC from Chicago!
The first thing I did when I learned that one of my favorite Chicago lounge/restaurants had opened on 18th St. was to throw on a black dress and yell "c'mon!".  Japonais is one of my favorite places to go in Chicago, especially in the warm weather. They are right on the river and have an outdoor deck off of the downstairs bar/lounge area with billowing white sheets separating tables/private "cabanas" from each other, while those not seated can stand at the rail and sip their cocktails.  Upstairs are two beautiful dining rooms with an outdoor dining deck on the opposite side of the building.
Knowing as I did that the food they do, which is Japanese with a flair...

Telepan

Telepan - Fresh, Creative, Well Thought Out Food
Bill Telepan's passion is using fresh foods that are in season. His creations are both interesting and well thought out, as well as being very tasty! Bill comes from the very successful and popular jUdson Grill, where he staked his claim on the list of top New York chefs. He is always there, overseeing the kitchen and making sure his diners are enjoying their meals, and correcting any problems that they may have (which I doubt occurs very often).
The decor of Telepan is somewhat of a shock when you walk in. Bright greens, reminescent of fresh produce are prevalant, accented by white and huge photos on the walls, which he will change by season in order to highlight those fresh products he...

The River Cafe
Right on the East River in Brooklyn, an elegant, finely dressed (and how hard is that to find in an NYC upscale restaurant anymore?) patronage enjoy perfectly prepared meals served by an attentive wait staff.  This is one of the top restaurants in New York if "Romantic" is one your criteria.

David Burke & Donatella Whimsical but Great Food
A well designed space, with a bar area and seating on the entrance level and more formal dining a few step down, the food here is imaginative, well presented and delicious. When I say imaginative and well presented I mean it - you will be dazzled and entertained by the composition of the plates served.  I think my favorite was the Ostrich Egg, with scrambled ostrich egg, caviar and crème fraiche, among other things. Being a lover of caviar I always thought I could eat it forever, but the amount of caviar served in this dish was even too much for me!, which left me to examine the enormous ostrich egg in front of me.  You can expect the same whimsy with all of the exceptionally ...

Crobar - What's the Hype?
As the editor's review says, it is a bit like the old "mega clubs" like Palladium or Tunnel; just not as cool.  The lines outside waiting to get in throw me for a loop - unless you are a young 20-something I don't see the attraction, unless you find yourself in the very small VIP room in the back. If you are looking for a crowded scene, you'll find the "labyrinthine" layout is great as it separates the Hip-Hop rooms from the Trance/Club rooms very well.  Well, since Tunnel and its sister clubs no longer exist...there's Crobar. But without that Peter Gatien touch that always made everything just a bit more "fabulous".
BTW - if you can get in, the Pink ...
