one very good friend
of mine has returned to the states from germany. he previously had been
in iraqi fighting the war. it was during the summer of 2005 that he
took this picture on the very rare visit home for around thanksgiving.
like a lot women of my generation,
i don't cook. not that i don't know how to; i am actaully pretty good
at it. i don't approach it with the enthusiam that most who enjoy
cooking do. i look at it as a chore. one that i don't mind doing for
the right person and the right time. i enjoy the ritual of food, rather
than the food itself. the act of preparing to eat and everything that
goes along with it is more enjoyabe to me than the actual food. so as
one can gather i enjoy the whole charade of eating out or ordering in.
this very good friend of mine, is
one of the few whom i have made exceptions for and cooked for. for the
past 6 years, whenever he makes it backs to the states, he requests
that in addition to hanging out and catching up, that i cook for him.
i always agree. not that i feel
compelled to excercise my culinary skills. nor do i feel that this
falls under the ordinary benefits of friendship. but we all make
exceptions. when a friend of years comes into town for a short stint, i
make exceptions. another reason for the exception is that i honestly
don't know when or if i will ever see him again. if he can fight for
the independance of this country, everyone in it myself included the
least i can do is spend a couple of hours in my kitchen! not only as an
american but as a friend.
