Ronny Brook Dairy Farm

In:

Yellow Pages

Milk Bar is a great addition to Chelsea Market
Okay, Ronnybrook's new Milk Bar is no Karova -- no Milk Plus, no Milk Plus Dreminol, and no Milk Plus Synthemesc, my droogie friends -- in fact you won't even find alcohol in this bar. And that's just fine. Because what they do serve is the creamiest ice cream west of Ninth Avenue. Deep in the rough-hewn heart of the Chelsea Market, this stylishly retro ice cream parlor blends the freshest natural ingredients with flash-pasteurized dairy products for exceptionally flavorful rich treats. The Milk and Honey blended milk "cocktail" features Hummingbird Ranch Honey, and tangy yogurt that's frothy and delicious. Their "shaken milk cocktails" include a moccachino with heavy cre...

Ava's rooftop lounge - what dreams are made of
Stepping into the lobby of the Dream Hotel on W 55th puts you in an altered state before you even step into the elevator to the penthouse to enjoy Ava Lounge.  The hotel is brimming with other-worldly curiosities from your deepest dreams and nightmares -- a giant barrel-shaped fish tank, enormous Buddhas, cabinets of exotic treasures, a raven, and other oddities. Even the elevator ride is marked by video of a soothing massage treatment and huge blue-tinted photo murals on each floor (and the elevator seems to stop on each floor).  The rooftop enjoys elegant views of Midtown and Broadway reaching into Times Square for nearly 360 degrees around the roof. Attentive and very lovely wai...

Rare View at the Shelburne Murray Hill

In:

Nightlife

3.5

Hi Life over Murray Hill
Sixteen floors above Lexington Avenue, the Rare View rooftop bar offers great views of the tops of midtown's classic skyscrapers.  By dark, the Rare View lights up, not just by the twinkley light strung across the terrace, but by the spires of the likes of the Chrysler, Met Life (nee, the Pan Am), Daily News (or the Daily Planet), the Seagrams, the Empire State, and, closer to eye level, numerous roof top water towers.
The after-work crowd huddles over small cocktail tables teetering on relatively comfortable straight-backed aluminum bar stools or at picnic tables surrounded by white lattice and a few noteworthy architectural details of the Selburn. A small blue canopy offers temporary...

Burgers & Cupcakes

In:

Restaurants

4.8

Your tummy will love you, even if your heart doesn't.
What you see is what you get on the marquee of this Chelsea eatery. It's burgers and it's cupcakes. And what more do you need? Here you can count on top-quality meat and rich cupcakes made with creamy butter. Ok, it's not all burgers and cupcakes, there's sides as well. And you can be sure that their twice-fried fries have never registered on the trans-fat meter. Wash 'em down with an egg cream, lemonade or lattes.
The burgers come in a variety of basic beef, turkey, chipolte chicken or the more exotic ostrich, venison or bison. There's also a porabello burger for those who don't want to look their lunch in the eye. Choose from a selection of cheeses and other toppings (for a price)...

Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction

Mo's is a smokin' venue where anything goes!!
The retro cool facade with Mo Pitkins' signature scrawled across Ave A in Neon on Black is a welcoming beacon to this wonderful venue.  Dark and rich interiors are drawn from somewhere between the Borscht Belt and 50's Vegas Lounge. The back lounge has red velvety curtains across the door and behind the stage.  Despite being a relatively narrow room, the stage is situated close to the center. Comfortable banquets all have a decent view. (perhaps the one booth near the front has an obstructed view.)  Cheesy portraits around walls and frosted deco lighting make you feel welcome, and so does the staff.
I was there for the opening night of Rev. Jen's Anti-Slam at Mo's. And we cou...

Junior's Restaurant

Why God created Brooklyn
Yeah, cheesecake, yadda yadda yadda. We all know that Juniors is famous for cheesecake -- and rightly so -- but don't forget that this is hands-down one of the greatest comfort food restaurants in New York City. I went their recently with my daughter one evening and ate off their breakfast-all-day menu.
Her poached egg on corned beef hash has to be the finest hash I've ever encountered. The minced corned beef was clearly lean flakes of real meat and thoroughly delicious. I went for the blueberry blinzes and again we were duely impressed. The three wallet-size blinzes were golden and not greasy and in no-way resembled egg rolls like almost all other blinzes I've encountered. And the ...

Mug Lounge

Unsure if they're a beauty parlor or bar
It seems that the dual character of this beauty shop in the daytime/bar lounge in the nighttime is more of a duel personality than a dual personality. Recent pub-goers attending Rev. Jen's Anti-Slam found that the hairstylists trying to finish up their last clients of the day are rude to the Art Stars attending the open reading -- even to the point of not being kind to restroom users. The pub is too noisey for art events. And the event that follows (a weekly S&M party) comes in an hour early to kick out the Anti-Slammers. They're treated like a doormat -- and not in a good way. The Anti-Slam is on the lookout for a better location fit, so let us know if you have a suggestion.

Rickshaw Dumpling Bar

In:

Restaurants

4.5

Take a Dumpling on 23rd Street!
Line up for an inventive array of dumplings - steamed or pan-fried at this sleek Chelsea take-out joint. The Szechuan Chicken dumplings have a tangy chili-soy dipping sauce and are a joy to bite into. You can order with a salad or noodle soup, but be sure to save room for dessert. Or better yet, skip the entrees and head straight to the Chocolage Shanghai Soup Dumplings. Inside these sesame-encased dumplings is a burst of melty dark chocolate (no soup though). Wash it all down with a green tea milkshake or lemonade.

Anti-Slam (in Exile) with Reverend Jen

Everyone is an Art Star at the Anti-Slam.
Rev. Jen's motley gang of Art Stars gathers for their weekly tribute to individuality, creativity, and decadence. Who will be there this week -- Faceboy, McNerds, Master Lee, or Satan himself? The only way to tell is to drop in for six minute sets of storytelling, poetry, news reports, or just plain silliness.
