I was just reading in the NY Times how black enrollment is down at CUNY's top three colleges: Hunter, Baruch and Harlem's City College of NY. The cause is said to be tougher admissions standards. Now I could use this time to debate whether or not all City public colleges have a responsibility to admit interested candidates even if they are underperforming, and the implications of racism of any possible line of action. But I'd rather offer an alternative solution (perhaps it already exists). Any New York City student who does not meet the admissions requirements of the city college of their choice should be able to attend a CUNY program to get their grades up to speed and correct past inadequacies -- a prep school. This would help even the playing field for students who may have been underserved by the Department of Education through their high school careers without demeaning the value of their ultimate degree. Does this make sense to anyone but me? Of course, since the purpose of this school is to undo the inadequacies of NYC schools, there should be free tuition available (ay, thar's the rub). Now back to the inevitable finger pointing.
