Joey's Feast brought Ramones spirit thru E. Village streets

I had the pleasure of celebrating "Feast of St. Joey" with my daughter this past May 19 in the East Village. The celebration of the late Joey Ramone's 55th birthday was alloted all the pomp and circumstance deserving of a cultural visionary. We were especially honored to help carry a giglio of Joey from Tompklns Square Park through the hallowed streets (St. Marks Place, The Bowery) to a potluck celebration was held at CB's 313 Gallery and offshoot multimedia venue of the legendary CBGBs. The event included music by the Hungry March Band, and open mike renditions of Ramones classics. If you can imagine what a marching band playing Ramones covers in a small venue must sound like, you have a clue of what kind of day it was. And in the process, they raised money for the Joey Ramone Foundation for Lymphoma Research. Please keep an eye out for future Hungry March events, including the Mermaid Parade - Sat. June 24 - Coney Island. (photo of the Joey Ramone giglio by Fred Askew.)

Plumm is Sexy Sweet

The newest night spot to sprout out of the Meatpacking District is The Plumm. The former site of Nell's keeps the velvet rope intact, allowing invitation-only attendance. (I only got in by being on the list for a book party.) The room is dark with rich paneled walls aglow with the warm light of large, boxy, orange chandeliers that put the club somewhere between a 19th century men's club and a Shanghai brothel. Low rectangular couches are placed squarely about, giving good sightlines to people-watch across the length of the club. Margaritas were sweetly-tart with just a little salt on the rim. Music was just loud enough to make conversations only slightly difficult. Black and white nude photos by Ian Cutler of shadows and patterns across fine flesh canvases sets a sultry mood. Seeing as how there have been several establishments in this space in the past year or so, I suggest you pick this fruit before it falls -- it may not get the chance to ripen.
The Plumm, 246 West 14th Street, Chelsea/Meatpacking District, between 7th and 8th.

Glorious View in Battery Park City -- More people watching than I expected.

Monday afternoon was so glorious, I thought I'd take my bike out for lunchtime and head down the Hudson River Park Bike Path for some sun and people watching. I thought I might stop off around Greenwich Village and sit a bit before heading back up to W33rd Steet. Well, I managed to get down to Battery Park City and ride around the waterfront a bit.
On the return trip coming out of Nelson Rockefeller Park and behind Stuyvesant H.S., a very attractive couple was headed the opposite direction. Not surprising, the young man was enjoying the weather with his shirt wide open to the sun with his ebony abs for all to see. And right beside him, so was his young lady companion -- rightly proud of her fine alabaster figure in full view through her open shirt flapping behind her like a black flag of victory.
So, I continued on, despite my thoughts of circling back for another viewing. And a few feet beyond, was a group of older Jamaican women, all very upset over what they'd just been exposed to. "Did'chew see dat wo-man dress dat way. Just what does she tink she's doing?" I heard as I rode by.
I just had to share that experience since it's the first time since it became legal in NYC that I've seen anyone take advantage of the right to bear bare breasts in public. I've always said I need to get out more for lunch!

Welcome to the Department of War

Next time your tooling around lower Manhattan, behind the Alexander Hamilton Customs House (Museum of the American Indian), check out the innocuous structure that calls itself 3 New York Plaza.
The NY Health and Racquet Club at 3 New York Plaza occupies the site of the infamous US Army Building of Alice's Restaurant fame -- "They got a building down New York City, it's called Whitehall Street, where you walk in, you get injected, inspected, detected, infected, neglected and selected." It is of course the site where many young men from the New York area went for their induction physicals. Today, young business folks go there to get physical and chug down a few Starbucks.
The 1886 structure was an imposing red brick structure with a domed roof. The health club builders didn't demolish the entire building -- the basic structure lies under the glass facade. The "renovation" (mostly demolition) went ahead full speed as preservation efforts went ahead. I remember when I was a teenager seeing the crew jackhammering out the Department of War emblem over the entrance. By the time it could be heard for landmarks consideration, too much damage was done, and work was allowed to proceed without any fines. The current atrocity was completed in 1983.
It had been abandoned for years, and friends of mine had heard rumors that the building acually housed a missle silo. Ah, nothing like a good conspiracy theory.

BIKE MONTH is here, and FINALLY winter is really over

After months of biking in freezing rain, wind, slush and generally horrid weather, across the debris-strewn bike paths of Staten Island and six flats later, I am pleased to announce that spring has finally arrived for the New York City cyclist. And with that, please join me in celebrating Bike Month. Morning, day and night rides are scheduled from the heart of Central Park to every far-flung desination – the Palisades, a Staten Island chocolate factory, the Brooklyn Waterfront, the Grand Concourse, Rockaway Beach, and everywhere in Between. The Bicycle Film Festival, graffiti tours, night rides and more, including the Five Borough Bike Tour. More than 150 events are set, thanks to Transportation Alternatives and the NYC departments of Transportation and Health. The details are here at the Bile Month 2006 Web site: http://www.transalt.org/calendar/bikemonth2006/
(have a Bike Month photo, e-mail it to me and I’ll post it here.)
