Yep, this is one big shout out to Mr. David Johansen and his New York Dolls for belting out some major tunes under the Cyclone at this year's Siren Festival. The Dolls were in top form singing about monkeys, pills and rock and roll. The thing I love about his rendition of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" is how he doesn't change the gender, singing "Didn't I make you feeeel like you were the only man?" in his deepest baratone. It was also great to see what all the hype is about NY's own Tamil Tiger, M.I.A., just back in the states after sweating out her visa appliaction. Nothing like anger and stress to bring out the best in an artist. Thumbs down to the usual jerks that show at these events -- borderline child molesters grinding on my daughter (who held her own with a sharpened thumb nail and strategically place button pins sticking off her purse), the crowd surfer who knocked down an unsuspecting concert goer and nearly caused a brawl, and the teen drunk pushing his way to the front, bumming cigs, sips and cash all the while getting his paws on quite a few sweeties. Overall a great night celebrating the final days of Coney as we know it.
