Post Mid-Term Anxieties

I had a chance to stop in on the Anti-Slam event at the Downeast Art Center Wednesday night  And one of the performers did a few minutes on how the Democratic win is really just a clever plot on the part of the Republicans (many of whom can now go home and start collecting their big checks from Haliburton and the like).  Although it was half tongue-in-cheek, I also had a conversation with another bike commuter on the Staten Island Ferry who thought that John Kerry's gaff was actually an indication that as a loyal Skull-&-Crossbones member, that he was doing his frat brother George W.B. (no, not George Washington Bridge) a favor and that his real role is to undercut the Democrats.
While there's always plenty of room for conspiracy theorizing, the more important point is that the Democrats are now on the spot to show their stuff in the next two years, and this without a seat in the executive office or enough votes to override a veto.   OK, if Georgie bends on minimum wage, immigration, etc. and if the economy starts to improve for real Americans - not just the oil companies and defense contractors - then the Democrats may look pretty good on those fronts.   But they also need to come up with their own plan, that can be clearly expressed, on what they want to aim for in the current world mess.   If that means a pull out, can they work with our allies and (yes) the U.N. to improve world security?   Or can they come up with a plan to stabilize Iraq and the region?   How?  By making peace with Iran?  Creating an Arab/Muslim-based security plan?  And even if this is realistic, can any of this be sold to the Freedom-Fry-munching American public?
Meanwhile, here in NY State the Democrats are back in the driver's seat (no thanks to my Staten Island neighbors), so hopefully all those midwesterners can come here soon for their same-sex marriage ceremonies, and we'll make tons of money on hotels, receptions, and Broadway show tickets.  (I know what you're thinking -- but everyone sees a Broadway show when they're in NY -- it's not intended as a stereotype.)

My boss says that it's much easier to point fingers that to lead.

Especially when you still don't wield any real power over the situation -- or have a plan.
