This Week In Music: March 26 - April 1

Bloc Party

Monday, March 26
Illinois
Cake Shop
$6

Possessing a similar pop sensibility that has converted so many to the sounds of Brendan Benson, Illinois aren't out to beat you over the head with their music, rather than letting its upbeat melody and story-telling wash over you. For the price of an NYC coffee, can you afford to pass this up?

Tuesday, March 27
Silversun Pickups
Theater at Madison Square Garden
$40

L.A.'s Silversun Pickups cleverly merge Smashing Pumpkins' polished rock-outs, flirtations with Emo and a dash of Imperial Teen call-and-response vocals to great effect. You've heard this before (and quite possibly when you were cramming for those dreaded mid-terms a decade ago) but when you're as good as Silversun Pickups, era-specific criticisms no longer seem a consideration.

Wednesday, March 28
Do Make Say Think
Southpaw
$15

Toronto Post-rock outfit, Do Make Say Think incorporate a jazz-rock rhythm section with fuzzy guitars and electronic sounds to produce high-impact instrumentals. Some serious and impressive jams make this a live music highlight.

Thursday, March 29
The Presets
Hiro Ballroom
$12/ $20

Destined for indie-dive-bar-dance-floor success stateside paralleling that which they've achieved in their Aussie homeland, Modular's (Wolfmother) The Presets make irresistibly dirgey electro-clash that makes you want to perform, be it in your apartment, out on the street, or in the darkness of that unsavory LES bar with the sticky carpets. Recharge the 3am partygoer in you and push on through the night…

Friday, March 30
Bloc Party
United Place Theatre
$34 (All ages)

Bloc Party were faced with quite a challenge in attempting to rise above the current mass of jerky, indie-rock outfits. A Weekend In The City has big shoes to fill in following 2005's Silent Alarm but Bloc Party have dealt out a full house of electro-twisted, spiky-guitar offerings. It's an assured, infectious collection and live, the always-on-target Bloc Party deliver with precision.

Saturday, March 31
Kristoffer Ragnstam
The Trash Bar
$10

Capable of Jagger-esque high-decibel power-soul, Ragnstam has a unique approach to his music. Being not-so-instrument-capable, he writes songs and explains the way he'd like to hear the songs to his 'musician' bandmates. Standouts on the Chris Brown (Radiohead) mixed album, Sweet Bills include Breakfast For The Matress and Lonely Lane.

Sunday, April 1
The Long Winters
Mercury Lounge
$15

With an extraordinary revolving line-up that includes the witty and charming singer/ guitarist, John Roderick, Ken Stringfellow (REM, The Posies) and non-touring member/ producer, Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), The Long Winters entertain with tight musicianship, a genuine love for performing and a humor that'll provoke belly laughs between songs. The 6-track Ultimatum EP is out now on Barsuk Records.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Return With Tour and New Album!!

BRMC - The Coolest U.S. Band of the Decade

Cool-as-fuck, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will headline a spring tour on the wings of the release of their fourth album, Baby 81, out May 1st on RCA Records. With their 2005 critically acclaimed album, Howl, BRMC proved their stalwart musicianship with their own brand of stripped down Americana and are now deftly transitioning back towards the color-saturated wash of guitars that made fans fall for the band in the first place.

"Weapon Of Choice" Audio Streams:
WM: WOC
QT: WOC
Real: WOC

If you've never experienced a BRMC live show before, you've missed out on seeing one of the best American rock bands of the last 10 years. Combining bluesy guitar riffs, wall-of-sound effects and a swagger not seen on a band since the Stone Roses, BRMC are what rock 'n roll was always meant to be about.

This Week In Music: March 19 - 25

GOLDRUSH

Monday, March 19
Jesse Malin
Bowery Ballroom
$15 adv/ $17 door

Though still a young upstart, Jesse Malin has been perfecting his song-writing craft for more than 20 years. A NYC local, Malin has worked with Ryan Adams, and more recently Bruce Springsteen, Jakob Dylan and Josh Homme. Watch for the new album, Glitter In The Gutter, out on March 20th.

Tuesday, March 20
The Young Knives
Luna Lounge
$12

With a heavy nod in the direction of Parklife-era Britpop, UK trio, The Young Knives combine Mod and Punk influences to create their sing/ speak song structures. Those who have a fetish for knees should check them out as they wear matching suits with shorts. Hubba hubba

Wednesday, March 21
The Decemberists
Landmark Lowes Theatre
$27.50 (All ages)

Moving from strength to strength, The Decemberists released their first major label effort, The Crane Wife in 2006. Critical acclaim rained down on them as did other media attention, most notably in the form of Stephen Colbert of Comedy Centrals, Colbert Report who challenged guitarist Chris Funk to a guitar solo competition on the show late last year. True to form, Colbert piked out and conveniently, one Peter Frampton was on hand and stepped in for Cobert. Cheeky monkey.

Thursday, March 22
Fratellis
Mercury Lounge
$12

Yes, it’s that iPod song you can’t get out of your head. You know the one by those Scots who just nabbed themselves a Brit Award last month as "Best British Breakthrough Act"? The Fratellis may have arrived at the "brandy in the den" portion of the whole cross-over indie-rock dinner party but don’t dismiss them unduly because these lads know their way around a song (complete with bah-da-bahs!).

Friday, March 23
Goldrush
Union Hall
$8 adv/ $10 door

Mark Gardener (ex-Ride) collaborators and all-round craftsmen of fine independent song-writing, Goldrush are touring in support of their new record, The Heart Is The Place (out on Better Looking Records. Opting to not follow the current trend of over-producing and polishing a record until it bears no resemblance to the songs original spirit, Goldrush instead have chosen to bottle their sonic gold with an understated yet assured skill.

Saturday, March 24
Holly Golightly & The Broke-Offs
Maxwell
s
$12

With no less than 13 albums to her credit and a slew of collaborations with everyone from The White Stripes and The Greenhornes to Billy Childish, Alt-rockabilly artist, Holly Golightly continues to write impassioned, cheeky and at times empowering songs.

Sunday, March 25
You Am I
Bowery Ballroom
$15

Aussie upstarts, You Am I are heavily influenced by the classics; everyone from Hank Williams to The Who. Equally capable of blistering all-out rock jams that would make Audioslave blush as sentimental ballads that’ll see you crying in your beer, Tim Rogers’ song-writing capabilities astound. Rogers’ shtick is too taunt the audience and boast that he’ll "steal your girlfriend"and you know.....he probably could.

Kings Of Leon to play NYC!

Kings of Leon have confirmed the first leg of a nationwide US tour in support of their new record, "Because Of The Times," to be released on April 3rd. Bookended by appearances at the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals, the tour will start at Coachella and heads to Seattle on May 2. After the June 14 date in Columbus, OH, the tour finishes at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

To make "Because Of The Times," the band turned once again to producers Ethan Johns and Angelo Petraglia. It is the Tennessee-based band's first record since 2004's widely acclaimed "Aha Shake Heartbreak," which firmly established the Followills - Nathan, Caleb, Jared and Matthew -- as international stars.

Coming off an immense amount of touring over the last two years both as headliners, world-wide festival staples and openers for the likes of U2, Bob Dylan and Pearl Jam, the ambitious and eclectic "Because Of The Times" (the title refers to an annual preachers' conference the boys attended growing up) is Kings of Leon's most diverse collection yet and represents a major evolution for the band. "We took the limitations off of ourselves," says frontman/rhythm guitarist Caleb. "We went into the studio with an open mind, thinking let's do whatever it takes to get these songs to the next level. Because we really have a lot of music inside of us and a lot of different places we can go."

Adds drummer/singer Nathan: "We weren't scared to try anything. I think that's the difference between this album and the last. We weren't timid at all. Every song showed us something we had inside of ourselves that we didn't know existed, which enabled us to be even bolder on the next song."

Filter said, the record "is the Kings' fiery repentance for unplanned pregnancies, black Camaros and the sins of the road, and it is their finest confession to date."

We think there's something in that for everyone.

The tour dates:

June

1 Atlanta, GA Tabernacle

2 Asheville, NC Orange Peel

4 NBC TV CONAN O'BRIEN

5 New York, NY Roseland Ballroom

6 Boston, MA Avalon

7 Philadelphia, PA Electric Factory

12 Toronto, ONT Kool Haus

15 Manchester, TN Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival

This Week In Music: March 12 - 18

The Raveonettes

Monday, March 12
The Raveonettes
Mercury Lounge
$15

The Raveonettes' Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo create dark, 60's garage-infused jams with swagger. At times setting the scene for a dusty ghost-town love affair while at others they smolder with hipster-shake and rattle coupled with fuzzy guitars. Vocally executed to perfection, white-hot Danes, Foo and Wagner compliment each other better than cowboy boots and vintage Ray-Bans. One not to miss!

Tuesday, March 13
Amy Winehouse
Bowery Ballroom
$18 adv/ $20 door

Possessing a rare vocal ability, recent Brit Award-winning, Amy Winehouse merges classic soul with a contemporary flair unseen since perhaps, Alicia Keys. A key player in the new movement termed, "Faux-Town" a play on the Motown label name and sound of the 1960's, one listen is all it takes to become a convert to this rising star. Despite well-publicized battles with alcohol and bulimia, what stands out is quite simply Winehouse's mesmerizing vocal talent.

Wednesday, March 14
The Shins
Theater @ Madison Square Gardens
$37.50

With expectations for the follow-up to Chutes Too Narrow reaching a climactic high, James Mercer and his posse have caused a collective sigh of relief around college campuses around the world. The new record, Wincing The Night Away is a masterpiece of melodic indie-pop.

Thursday, March 15
The Pogues
Roseland Ballroom
$54

Shane MacGowan's pioneers of Celtic Punk return to NYC for this special show. Having sold out their NYC performance last year, these tickets will be highly coveted especially due to whispers that they may introduce to their set, some freshly written songs which have yet to be recorded.

Friday, March 16
Pete Yorn
Roseland Ballroom
$30

Treading the line between independent rock and fist-in-the-air-stadium-rock is no easy feat. Pete Yorn manages this balance delicately with guitar-heavy rock-outs and schmaltz-free acoustic ballads. Yorn, who has relentlessly toured over the past few years, is guaranteed to deliver a rock-solid performance that includes tracks from his most recent release, Nightcrawler. Some of the oh-so-hot-right-now rock bands getting high-rotation on Modern Rock radio could take a leaf or two from Yorn's book when it comes to giving it all live.

Saturday, March 17
The Double
Cake Shop
$8

Distorted guitars and electro-beats neatly house the sparse vocals than swim through The Double's sonic landscape. Interestingly they create a sound that layers traditional acoustic rhythms with samplers and experimental bleeps and digi-noise to produce something easily digestible.

Sunday, March 18
The Heath Brothers
Village Vanguard
$30 (inc $10 drink voucher)

"Hard Bop" outfit, The Heath Brothers have been making an indelible mark on the world of jazz since the 1940s. Since the death in 2005 of bassist Percy, the lineup includes Jimmy Heath, tenor saxophone; Jeb Patton, piano; Paul West, bass; Albert "Tootie" Heath, drums; Russell Malone, guitar.

Robert Gomez to play NYC!

The sensative butcher: Robert Gomez

Robert Gomez is a troubadour cut from the darkest cloth, crafting atmospheres as vast and beautiful as the midnight Texas sky. Paying no mind to simple genres on his debut, Brand New Towns, Robert Gomez explores the textures of mood, often finding his voice in the seemingly saddest spots.

A student and lover of music since early childhood, Robert Gomez learned his lessons in expression in locales as disparate as the snowy sidewalks of New York City, under the suffocating summer sun of Denton, Texas, and from the cramped quarters of a swaying and clattering circus train. He lived and breathed the circus life for 6 months first with Ringling Bros and then the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The resultant album shows that as well as being a keen observer of love and loss, Gomez also writes with finesse and restraint, his lyrics delivered in a hushed croon. His talented crew of players glance sideways across meandering tempos and towards the finale, when the curtain will drop on another rainy afternoon. On these grey days, Gomez provides the light; in effect, cutting open the blackest night, with our eyes opened wide, giving himself wholly through tune.

The debut cd by Robert Gomez 'Brand New Towns' is set for release on March March 20th.

"Beck's softer moments, Grandaddy's playful pastoralism and John Lennon's melodic shifts haunt these songs beautifully."

David Vanderveld/ Richard Swift to play NYC - FREE MP3s

Man's best friend: David Vandervelde

You've heard the names, now experience the live performance. Currently touring the UK together, Richard Swift and David Vandervelde will be returning to the States just in time for SXSW, and beginning in April will embark on a national tour together. See the New York dates below.

Together, these two Secretly Canadian artists have got all sorts of smart folks reeling back to the golden age of rock; before disco, before punk, and before hip hop. Both have released fantastic albums this year to critical acclaim - Swift's latest "Dressed Up For The Let Down" and Vandervelde's debut "The Moonstation House Band".

Mojo had the following to say on Swift's "Dressed Up For The Letdown":

"FOUR STARS. It's not stringently retro, more a Tin Pan Alley of the Imagination."

CMJ hailed Vandervelde's "Moonstation" as a stunning debut and a "glamorous, ambitious studio work".

Mojo rejoiced in "the arrival of an eccentric talent whose head is firmly inclined toward the past" while NME claimed his work recalls "the best of T. Rex, ELO or early Bee Gees."

But these guys aren't through yet! Both have new singles on the near horizon.

Out May 22, Richard Swift's 3-song "Kisses For The Misses" 7-inch is the debut single from his new full-length. The A-side is pure Swift - a piano-driven pop tune sung with the moxie of a wizened songsmith; three minutes of wonder that takes you back thirty-five years to a classic era of smart L.A. pop music. Although it's not out for a few months, we are making one of the B-sides - Swift's awesome take on Prince's "Paisley Park" - available as a free MP3 for a limited time. Also available is the Swift-directed "Vampyros Lesbos" meets "Murder, She Wrote" video for "Kisses For The Misses".

Richard Swift "Paisley Park" Mp3:

Richard Swift "Kisses For The Misses" Video:

Only six months after introducing Vandervelde to the world with his debut "Jacket", Secretly Canadian is presenting the album's lead-off track "Nothin' No" as the second single from The Moonstation House Band. A paean to young lust and getting high, "Nothin' No" is a modern rock classic that recalls the spirit of glam rock's most earnest & timeless teen anthems. Also included on this extended CD single are an alternate version of "Feet of a Liar" (recorded for his Daytrotter session at the end of 2006), a visceral new song called "Cute Pretender" and the beautiful Jimmy Page-esque "Dancing Sea Gulls Instrumental". This CD single will not be in stores until June 19 but the following tracks can be downloaded for free right now:

This Week In Music: March 5 - 12

                                                                            Of Montreal

Monday, March 5

Under Byen

Bowery Ballroom

$13

What is it about Scandinavian bands that lead them to create such engaging, left-of-center music? Is it because they're not beholden to the gravitational pull of scenes within larger music markets? Is it symptomatic of the sun going down at 3pm in winter and it only getting dark (or almost dark) for a couple of hours per night in summer? Think Sigur Ros. Think Bjork. Think heavenly arrangements and otherworldly vocals set amongst fairy lights and full moon.

Tuesday, March 6

Grizzly Bear

Studio B

$12 adv/ $14 door (All ages)

Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear create a tapestry of folk melodies set behind soft-echoed vocals (at times sounding like the Beach Boys had Dennis not become pally with Charles Manson, Mike Love not been such an uptight tyrant and had Brian persuaded the whole band to take heroin).

Wednesday, March 7

Die! Die! Die!

The Annex

$8

Kicking off their coast-to-coast US tour, punk-rock Kiwis, Die! Die! Die! are here to flog their Albini-recorded, self-titled album. If you like it loud enough to tear the walls, energetic, punchy and sweat-soaked these 3 lads are available and committed to prompt delivery of sonic cannon balls.

Thursday, March 8

Stellastarr*

Luna Lounge (Brooklyn)

$10

Stellastarr*? (That's effectively, "Starstar*" isn't it? If you include the asterix, it's…erm, "Starstarstar"?) Like Interpol and Editors, Stellastarr* are painted with a similar early 80's UK-independent brush. You've heard a bunch of these bands over the last 4 years or so but if you're ready to hit the "overload" button by all means punch it, but not before embracing the sickeningly hooky guitar licks (Eddie Van Halen anyone?), anthemic choruses and indie-poptastic high-hat/ kick-drum combos of Stellastarr*. Bravo.

Friday, March 9

Clinic

Gramercy Theater

$18 adv/ $20 door

The once-tipped-to-be-big Clinic have no reason to apologize. While other independent bands have emerged and eclipsed their modest sales (and success for that matter), 10 years strong, this Liverpudlian outfit has quietly and confidently churned out quality recordings of brooding punk-meets-southern-rockabilly-meets-fuzzy-organ-psychedelia. Watch out for their recently released, Visitations on Domino Records

Saturday, March 10

Of Montreal

Irving Plaza

$16

With a pop non-sensibility on their sides, Of Montreal aim to hook you with humor and consistently polished sounds. Their recently released Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer (Polyvinyl) positions itself somewhere between upbeat and downright sassy. Fire in the Indie-disco!

Sunday, March 11

The Pipettes

Luna Lounge

$10 adv/ $12 door

Doo-wop and Girl-group influenced, The Pipettes perform in matching polka-dot dresses and synchronized choreography. While debate has arisen regarding whether or not the group is merely a manufactured pop band (which appears a distinct possibility when you hear some of the corny lyrics) seems irrelevant so long as they keep their high-entertainment value.

Bishop Allen to play NYC!

For the first time in nearly three years, Bishop Allen will be headlining an extensive U.S. tour, visiting cities all across the east coast.

In 2006, Bishop Allen supported We Are Scientists and Starlight Mints
on tour, playing extensively in NYC and throughout the northeast. But, the band's greatest feat is a modern-day DIY story that recalls Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's successful self-released debut: Bishop
Allen self-released an EP every month of the year.

Yes, Bishop Allen released 12 EPs in 2006, selling copies exclusively via their website and at shows. The series was an internet sensation, with influential blogs such as Music for Robots, Said The Gramophone and You Aint No Picasso praising the band's pop sensibility month
after month. Without the help of a label or a publicist, Bishop Allen vaulted to the top of the blogosphere.

2007 is shaping up to be another big year. Bishop Allen has joined forces with the newly minted Dead Oceans label, and this summer, they'll be releasing their sophomore album on it. In addition, the band will tour extensively, starting with the jaunt in March, featuring mainstays Justin Rice and Christian Rudder leading a robust six-piece incarnation of the band.
