AIR: Live Review - MSG Theatre, May 10 (Kate Havnevik support)

AIR

Yowser!! You know when AIR jet into town that no matter whether the rent is due, the sneaker department needs a refurbishment or the hair needs a trim, it's time to hand over those doubloons for an unsurpassed live music experience.

The duo have been busy. When not partnering up with Sophia Coppola to create warm and textured soundtracks or holding hands with artists like Charlotte Gainsbourg through her journey to deliver one of last years more engaging records, 5:55, you'll find them noodling in the studio with Nigel Godrich, writing music that defies genre (other than those which they helped to create).

On record, AIR manage the soundscapes that their audience love to recline to; digital symphonies if you will. Live they're another beast altogether. Vocally, they're true to their records but musically they're punchier, sharper and possess the flexibility to well, roque out! Their MSG Theatre performances last week will attest the fact that while wearing the hat of “chill-masters”, they need not be confined to any doped-out, electro crowd. Check out the new record, Pocket Symphony (Astralwerks).

Special mention goes to Norway's Kate Havnevik who opened their shows on this North American tour. Her record, Melankton (Universal Republic) has recently been released stateside and if tonight's crowd is anything to go by, she will win some hearts before she's through. Comparisons to Bjork are obvious but while Bjork has moved towards experimental indulgences over the years, Havnevik walks the straight and narrow while also remaining artistically challenging. Check out the single, Unlike Me.
