Introducing Jared Pauley and the new music blog

I plan on keeping people up to date each week with the musical happenings of New York City. Whether you're already a resident or planning a visit, check out this blog to find out the latest in entertainment.

Let's start this week with Smoke Jazz Club. Located on 106th and Broadway on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the club offers a variety of different jazz each night of the week. Highlights from this week include saxophonist Marcus Strickland and his twin brother drummer E.J. Strickland. They're playing Thursday night. There's a $15 food and drink charge, which is cheap for New York standards. They're playing two sets with the first one starting at 8:00 p.m. Expect some swing with a mix of hip-hop and Latin grooves! Check out www.smokejazz.com for more information.

Other happenings this week in the jazz world include former Groove Theory singer Amel Larrieux at the Blue Note tonight through Wednesday night. This weekend the Blue Note is hosting Israeli born bassist/pianist Avishai Cohen. Cohen has performed extensively with Chick Corea and you should expect nothing short of a stellar performance from him. You can get the full details at www.bluenotejazz.com.

Manhattan is definitely not the only place to see good music in the city. Let's jump over the East River and see what Brooklyn has to offer. This week at Southpaw you can catch DJ Cash Money spinning funk on Thursday night and on Friday night world famous DJ Clark Kent is hosting the Sneaker Appreciation Event. The cover is $15 for Kent's event, but expect some good live performances from some guest emcees. At McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint this weekend, rock legends Sonic Youth are performing Saturday night. Tickets are $35, and the doors open at 4 p.m. For further information on these events check out www.spsounds.com and www.mccarrenpark.com to get the complete details.

Heading back to Manhattan, BB King's always offers a diverse range of music and this week is no exception. If you remember the 1980s like I do, you will remember Toto who topped the charts. Well, things have changed a little for guitarist Steve Lukather who played with them, and he's playing BB King's on Wednesday with a show that promises to please the Toto fanatic. Later in the week BB King's opens its' doors to the Black August Hip-hop benefit, which was supposed to take place at the Nokia Theatre but got moved at the last minute. The bill for this show is stellar and it features DJ Evil Dee, Bilal, EPMD, Das EFX, Joel Ortiz and a host of others. The price for the show is $25, but if you're a hip-hop fan like me, you'll be there! Check out www.bbkingblues.com for more information on these and other shows.

Until next time, whether you're dwelling in the streets of Manhattan or living abroad, check out a show! I'll be back later this week for more updates and some reviews next week for some of the shows I've posted information about. Peace out and one love!
