New York City's only non-island borough, The Bronx takes its name from the Bronck family which owned and leased a great deal of land in the area, making it, literally, the Bronck's. By the 1920's, the Bronx had become a haven for bootleggers and speakeasies during Prohibition, although it has quieted down considerably since then, with shopping districts like Fordham Road and the Hub popping up to appease the highly residential tilt of the borough.
